Word Counter
Live word, character, sentence and paragraph statistics plus reading-time estimates. Works offline on any text — no length limits, nothing uploaded.
Tips
“Characters” counts every code unit exactly like a school assignment would; “Chars (no spaces)” excludes tabs and spaces. The reading estimate assumes 200 words per minute — a common average for adult readers. Everything is computed as you type, and the UTF-8 size is what a backend would measure for a byte-limited field.
How to use Word Counter
Paste text and the counters update live: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time at 200 words per minute. The top-keywords panel lists the most frequent meaningful words, so lexical echo shows itself before an editor would catch it.
Character counting respects CJK text, where one character is one unit rather than part of a word — counts stay meaningful for mixed-language drafts. Meta-description and title-length guidance sits beside the counters, tuned for the 150 to 160 and 50 to 60 character budgets that search engines reward.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Words split on whitespace with Unicode-aware rules, so CJK text, emoji and mixed-language documents count sensibly instead of collapsing into wrong totals.
Does the tool estimate reading time?
Yes — based on roughly 200 words per minute for prose, with the estimate shown next to the totals. Long technical documents adjust the pace automatically.
Are character counts with or without spaces?
Both. Characters including spaces cover abstracts and ad limits, while characters excluding spaces help for platforms that count that way — side by side.
What else does the counter track?
Sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words and top-keyword density, which covers the metrics writers and SEO editors check most often.
